Autumn breaks in Cornwall have a special atmosphere that feel completely different from summer. By the second week of September, the A30 has quietened, there is space in the car park at Constantine Bay, and the coast belongs to whoever stayed.

Yes. Autumn is arguably the best time to visit Cornwall. The sea is the jewel in the crown of this glorious season when the water is warmer now than it was in June. The light comes in low across the dunes, the greens hold their pace into November, and Padstow feels like a working harbour town again. There is rain, of course, but also the kind of crisp, bright weather that makes a walk to Booby’s Bay a joy (especially if you can snuggle by the fire afterwards).
Fewer crowds, and what that actually changes
Cornwall in Autumn is quieter. You can walk into a restaurant in Padstow without booking months ahead, the single-track lanes between Trevone and Harlyn stop being so chocka, and the beaches thin out to a handful of dog walkers and surfers.
For golfers, the same thing happens on the course. Tee sheets loosen, and the Championship Course opens up in a way it simply does not in July.
Warmer waves
The Atlantic holds its summer heat well into the season. October is still comfortable in a wetsuit, and plenty of local swimmers carry on into November without one.
Autumn also brings the groundswells that make Constantine and Booby’s Bay some of the most reliable surf on this coast, and many surf schools stay open into September/October.
Better value on accommodation and green fees
Autumn brings some of the best value of the year. Once the school holidays end, rates ease, and they ease again after October half term, with green fees following the same curve. It means an autumn break in Cornwall can stretch that bit further.
The coast at its most dramatic
Autumn is when this stretch of coast is at its most glorious. Storms roll in off the Atlantic and break against Trevose Head, the sunsets last longer, and the low sun rakes across the dunes in a truly magical way.

Cornwall’s autumn weather is milder than most of the UK. September averages around 18°C in the daytime, October around 15°C, and November around 12°C. Rainfall increases through the season, but the Atlantic keeps frosts rare.

Cornwall doesn’t do extremes in autumn. What it does do is change its mind quickly, which is a different problem (and a much easier one to plan around!).
What the sea temperature is really like
The sea lags behind the air by about two months, which is why September is the warmest water of the year. It takes all summer to heat up, and it gives that heat back slowly.
September sits around 17°C. October is still 15°C or so, which is warmer than most British beaches manage in July. By November you are down to about 13°C and into proper wetsuit territory, though you will still find people swimming in the sea with just their swimsuits!
How much rain to expect in Cornwall in Autumn
October and November are genuinely wet months. Around 16 or 17 rain days each. Cornish rain tends to arrive fast and leave fast. A morning that looks written off often clears by lunchtime, and a lot of autumn days are a mix rather than a washout. Plan around it and keep something indoors in reserve, but you will lose far fewer days than the numbers suggest.
What to pack for a Cornish autumn
Pack layers you can add and shed, because a coastal walk in October can go from warm to bracing in ten minutes. Walking boots or trainers you do not mind getting wet.
Bring swimming kit (even in November) as you will probably want it. And something smarter for dinner, because Padstow in autumn is still Padstow.
Which Month Is Best? September vs October vs November
All three are good for different reasons. September has the warmest sea and the longest days, October brings half term and the best autumn colour, and November is the quietest and best value of the year.
Things to Do in Cornwall in Autumn
Coastal walks on the north coast
This is the main event. The South West Coast Path runs right past Trevose Golf Club, and the stretch from Padstow to Porthcothan takes in most of what makes this coastline worth the drive.
Start easy with the loop around Constantine Bay and Booby’s Bay, where the low tide opens up a long sweep of sand and the shipwreck of Karl occasionally shows itself. The Trevone to Padstow walk is about four miles and passes Round Hole, a collapsed sea cave.
Autumn surfing and sea swimming
The surf gets better as the season goes on. Swells arrive from September and keep coming, and Constantine picks them up reliably. There is something about a sea swim on a bright autumn morning that summer does not replicate. Lifeguard cover reduces after the summer season, so check before you go in.
Padstow and the harbour towns out of season
Padstow in autumn is the town locals love. Fishing boats working, restaurants taking bookings at reasonable notice, and space on the harbour wall.
The Camel Trail is at its best now, running the old railway line from Padstow to Wadebridge and on to Bodmin. Flat, easy, and lined with trees that turn properly in October.
Take the ferry across to Rock if the tide allows and walk on to Daymer Bay.
Port Isaac, Rock and Wadebridge are all within easy reach and all far more relaxed than they are in August.
Autumn gardens and woodland colour
Cornwall’s gardens do this season very well. Lanhydrock near Bodmin has 900 acres of estate with beech avenues that turn spectacularly in autumn, and Cardinham Woods next door is good for a straightforward woodland walk (with a cosy cafe).
Closer to home, Prideaux Place on the edge of Padstow has a deer park and gardens. Further afield, the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project are both about an hour away and considerably more pleasant without the summer queues.
Wildlife: seals, choughs and Atlantic storm-watching
Grey seals haul out along this coast year-round and are often visible from the path around Trevose Head. Autumn is pupping season, so keep your distance and use binoculars.
Choughs have returned to the Cornish cliffs after decades away, and this stretch is one of the better places to spot them. Offshore, autumn is prime time for whale and dolphin sightings, and the Padstow boat operators run trips through the season.
Rainy day options in North Cornwall
Some days the weather wins. Padstow’s museum and galleries are small but good. The National Lobster Hatchery on South Quay is more interesting than it sounds. Truro and Falmouth are both worth the drive, and the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth easily fills an afternoon.
Or stay put. The pool, the gym and the Short Course are all here, and there is no shame in a long lunch while it blows through.

Why autumn conditions suit links golf
Links courses are built for this. The sandy soil drains fast, so the ground stays firm and playable long after inland courses have turned soft.
The wind is a bigger factor now, which is the point. Autumn is when the Championship Course shows you what it actually is: a proper links test that asks you to keep the ball down and think your way round. The turf is in good condition, the greens hold their pace into November, and the course is quiet.

The Championship Course is the draw, and autumn is arguably the best time to play it. Fewer people, faster rounds, and conditions that reward good ball-striking.

Not everyone plays. The padel and tennis courts are open through autumn, and padel in particular is easy to pick up for the first time. There is also the pool, the gym, and a coast path that starts at the edge of the property.
October Half Term in Cornwall
Half term dates and when to book
Cornwall’s autumn half term runs from 26 to 30 October 2026. Most English counties fall in the same week, though a few differ, so check your own local authority before booking.
That week is the busiest of the autumn by some distance. Book early, ideally by the summer, and be aware that the weeks either side are much quieter and cheaper if you have any flexibility.
Family-friendly things to do on the north coast
Rock-pooling comes into its own on autumn low tides, and Treyarnon and Trevone both have good pools. The Camel Trail is easy going for younger cyclists.
Beach days still work in October, with wetsuits. Surf lessons are widely available. And there is usually something on locally for half term, including Halloween events at the National Trust properties.

How long to stay
Three or four nights is the sweet spot. Long enough for two rounds, a couple of proper walks, a night at Constantine and a day in Padstow, without the drive feeling disproportionate. A week works well in September and October if you want to explore further into the county. In November, a long weekend is often the better call.
Getting here and getting around
Most guests drive. The A30 is quick in autumn, and the run down from Bristol takes around three hours without the summer queues at Bodmin.
Newquay Airport is 20 minutes away with connections from several UK cities. By train, Bodmin Parkway is about 40 minutes from us. You will want a car once you are here, though the coast path and the Camel Trail cover a lot of ground on foot.
When to book
Half-term week books up first, followed by September. November has the most availability, though the best lodges still go.
For golf, book tee times when you book the room. Autumn is quieter, but it is not empty.
